NSWFA COVID-19 UPDATE June 11th

FURTHER UPDATE ON NSWFA COVID-19 UPDATE ON FENCING

TRAINING AND COMPETITIONS

11 June 2020

Since our 9 June update on the resumption of training and competitions, there have been further developments.

OPENING OF COMMUNITY SPORT

Yesterday the NSW Minister for Sport announced via the media that there will be no age limit when community sport opens up again from 1 July. Previously only indoor competitions for Under 18s were to be allowed. Now, adults can get back to fencing competitions indoor as well.

JULY COMPETITIONS

Please note that there was a typo in our 9 June update:  the “21 July” date for the start of U18 comps is a typo.

The first U18 Competition will be the Peter Witkop Club Shield on 5 July 2020 – Individual Epee (U12 and U14) –

Individual Foil (U8, U10 and U12) – Individual Sabre (U14).

This will be followed by:

  • 12 July: The U15 Individual and Club Teams Reboot – All Weapons; and
  • 19 July: The Cadet Individual and Club Teams Reboot All Weapons

We are now working on scheduling competitions for the older age groups (U20/U23/Open/Veteran) starting in August. We are also actively working with the AFF on an advisory panel to plan national competitions.

When competitions resume, we will all need to follow the strict hygiene and distancing rules as set out in the Covid- 19 Protocol sent earlier to members and clubs. Hence, depending on the number of competitors in any competition we may need to have a limit on spectators/parents. We will keep you advised.

LIMIT OF 100 PEOPLE LIFTED

In a further statement today, the Office of Sport advises that the limit of 100 people at an indoor recreation venue has been lifted, however, the rule that there must be 4 sqm of space for each person still applies.

TRAINING IN GROUPS

The restriction of 10 people per training group does not include coaches. While there is a stipulation of one training group/ class “per space” we consider that, subject to the 4sqm density rule, a venue can create separated, delineated spaces to accommodate more than one group of 10. At the NSW Fencing Centre, for instance, we are looking at creating delineated spaces to allow for more groups to train.

ADDITIONAL PROTOCOL REQUIREMENT

Please note that the Covid-19 Protocol is being revised to include the wiping down of equipment that is touched (eg remote controls, cable and clips) after bouting.
