Sophia and Tommy carry the torch for Australia and NSW at Asian Cadet Champs

Sophia Glasson and Tommy Xu were our best performers on day 1 of the Asian Cadet Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Both made the top 16.

In Women’s Foil, Sophia had a good 5V-1D pools round to rank 8th out of 51, earning a bye in the 64. In the round of 32, she beat a Hong Kong fencer 15-6 but had to concede her round of 16 bout 15-11 to a fencer from Taiwan.

In Men’s Epee, Tommy was 3V-3D in pools to rank 35 from 68. Putting in a great effort, he managed to finish the competition 21 places higher in 14th spot.

In the 64 he beat a fencer from Kazakhstan 15-30 then a fencer from Kyrgyzstan 15-14 in the 32.

In the 16, Tommy faced the gold medal winner, Nam from Korea, and lost 15-7.

Gutsy efforts from Sophia and Tommy.

Among our other fencers competing today, Amelia Whelan won her round of 64 bout 15-6 against a fencer from India then went down 15-12 against a Japanese fencer.

Oscar Shi and Daniel Iliffe were both knocked out in the 64 of the Men’s Sabre.
